New Music – Margaret Glaspy, Bonniesongs, Daniel Wilson
New acts to cheer from New York, Dublin/Sydney and Ypsilanti
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
The California-born, New York-based singer-songwriter’s debut album “Emotions and Math” arrives next month and we can expect her distinctive songcraft to add many more people to her growing fan-club. Those songs, as seen by “You & I below, run sweet and sour, in line with Glaspy’s voice which can also go from barbed to tender over bluesy guitar riffs which know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em.
Irishwoman in Sydney Bonnie Stewart’s experimentations, which began in a treehouse in Byron Bay, have produced some sweeping results to date. Influenced by such musical outliers as Tuneyards, Bjork and Joanna Newome, Stewart’s work makes great use of how conventional folk sounds, stylings and instruments can be flipped with a bit of imagination to become the basis for something more daring and scene-setting.
Meet OTR’s first ever new music selection from Ypsilanti, Michigan. Taken from his forthcoming “Sinner of the Week” EP, Daniel Wilson’s “Wedding Daze” is a marvel, a showcase for a beautiful gospel-friendly voice which works fantastically well against an euphoric electro soundbed to create an anthem to thrill about. Like his earlier tracks, this is the handiwork of an artist with something special to offer.
