New Music – Mereki, Point Point, Smerz
OTR’s first new music round-up of 2016 calls to Los Angeles, Paris and Copenhagen
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
Originally from Australia and now based in Los Angeles, Mereki Beach’s “Sirens” is a superb showcase for her warm, distinctive vocals and strong talent when it comes to throwing out big electropop hooks. She’s got form in the songwriting and performance department, having co-written Kylie Minogue’s “Golden Boy” and toured with Goldroom. Expect much more from her in the coming months.
Paris collective Point Point are a crew of producers and spinners who have been responsible for a host of excellent compilations of cuts and breaks over the last few years under the “Filet Mignon” moniker. Their latest track “All This” indicates that Aazar, L’homme aux 4 lettres, Nomak, and Devoted To God are moving to a whole new level with their own handiwork. A track which builds and twists and turns into a real hands-in-the-air feel-good killer, “All This” whets your appetite for more from this quarter.
One of the (many) acts we’re looking forward to catching at next week’s Eurosonic in Groningen, Smerz are a Norwegian duo based in Copenhagen whose new single “Because” comes with savage earworm appeal. The work of Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg, “Because” is as graceful and well-cut a pop single as they come at any time of the year. Live, they were one of the acts people mentioned in the despatches from last year’s Sonar and Roskilde festivals.
