Aretha Franklin “One Step Ahead” (Columbia)

As used to sublime effect in Moonlight, the best flick I’ve seen in 2017 so far

Jidenna “The Chief” (Wondaland/Epic)

There’s a Jidenna track in Moonlight (“Classic Man”) too and his mentor Janelle Monae shows real star power in the flick, but it’s his debut album which we’re still dazzled by this week

Drake “Energy” (Cash Money/OVO)

One of many standouts from Drizzy’s Dublin show earlier in the week.

Deep Throat Choir “Be OK” (Bella Union)

Superb melodies and harmonies from the Luisa Gerstein-directed all-female all-singing collective.

Meat Wave “The Incessant” (Big Scary Monsters)

Ripping gnarly chaos and explosive energy on the title track to the Chicago band’s new album

Nikki Lane “Highway Queen” (New West)

Outlaw country queenpin puts her boots on the monitors with loads of lip, snarl and attitude.

Cubicolor “Dead End Thrills (Patrice Bäumel remix)” (Anjunadeep)

Deep dreamy intense tech makeover from the Kompakt and Trouw dude

Clap! Clap! “A Thousand Skies” (Black Acre)

Vibrant colourful sound splashes galore on the second album from Florence producer Cristiano Crisci with help from John Wizards, Bongeziwe Mabandla, OY and HDADD.

Various “Peace Chant” (Tramp)

A magnificent haul of raw, deep and spiritual jazz from the rare grooves’ archive.
