The real Cork jazz festival
The ECM Weekend Festival brings one of the world’s finest record labels to Cork
There was a lot of giving out and fuming the other week about the lack of jazz at the Cork Guinness Jazz Festival. Granted, I did my share of it, though it seems that there was also plenty of criticism at the event itself directed at a festival which once put jazz at the very top of the bill but now prefers to jazz it up with the Boomtown Rats, the Coronas and Gary Numan.
Good news for Cork music fans then is that there’s another jazz festival on the horizon and this one will actually live up to billing. The ECM Weekend festival will showcase one of the world’s most innovative labels when it comes to jazz and classical musc at the Triskel Christchurch between November 27 and 29. Acts playing the event over the weekend include June Tabor, Arve Henriksen, John Potter, Iain Ballamy, Thomas Strønen and Quercus. There will also be a screening of ECM movies, ECM listening sessions hosted by PLUGD records and (DOI ahead) a Banter discussion as well.
It promises to provide some pretty special musical highlights. It’s certainly the only festival happening in Ireland this winter which will feature John Potter’s “Amores Pasados”. Potter and Trio Medieval’s Anna Maria Friman will combine with lute maestros Jacob Heringman and Ariel Abramovich to perform lute songs by rock musicians like John Paul Jones, Ton Banks and Sting alongside 17th and early 20th century originals and transcriptions.
