New Music – Jess Nolan, Jarryd James, Carron
New tips for your sound-of-2018 hitlist from Brisbane, Miami and Dublin
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
From Miami, Jess Nolan hits the ground running with “My Love”, a Noise Club-produced track with all the right modern pop accoutrements. Nolan’s voice is top-notch but the song is a real ear-worm, with noir-esque edges, a really strong melodic heart and a hook which keeps you enthralled. Consider us a member of the Nolan fanclub.
The buzz starts with the song and “Do You Remember?” is one heck of a tune. The work of Brisbane musician Jarryd James, it’s a strong, vibrant, commanding performance, full of wonky pop notes and lovely electronic tones. You can tell that James, like so many young producers of late, has studied the James Blake handbook closely, but the melodic sensibility here is well worth tapping for more.
It’s always interesting to see when acts move from covers to original material. Dublin sisters Meabh and Mella Carron may have started their run with Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Florence & The Machine covers, but it’s the original material on their Soundcloud page which really grabs your attention. Simple, unadorned acoustic tunes with a smidgin of folk, a rub of trad and a big dash of pop, there’s enough potential on show from the Carron siblings on “Battle Lines” to mark them as ones to watch.
