New Music – Bibi Bourelly, Oh Pep, The Comet Is Coming
New hits incoming from Los Angeles, Melbourne and London
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
You’ve already heard the work of Bibi Bourelly already, but probably didn’t click it. The Berlin-born and LA-based singer and songwriter, who has been writing and performing since she was a nipper, co-wrote Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” and has had a ton of other writing and collaborative credits. Now signed to Def Jam, her own tunes are pretty damn impressive too with “Sally” packing a really strident alt-anthemic punch.
From Melbourne, Oh Pep were originally put together by Melbourne schoolkids Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs back in 2009. Fast-forward seven years, add a few members, throw in some more experience, lob in more astute songwriting and compositional craftwork and you’ve Oh Pep, a band of musical thrill-seekers mining the pop/folk hinterland for foot-stomping nuggets of gold. Debut album on the way this summer and playing Whelan’s in Dublin tonight.
How can you not love a band called The Comet Is Coming? The London-based’s trio’s new album “Channel the Spirits” is chockablock with far side musical gems, a sound which pulls, pushes, tugs and digs a rich, vibrant, spectacular mix of jazz, Afrobeat and electronica with bleeps, glitches and squalls of perfectly tuned noise.
