Susumu Yokota RIP
The Japanese musician behind such glorious ambient albums as “Sakura” and “The Boy & The Tree”
Very sad news from the Leaf and Lo labels about the death of producer, composer and musician Susumu Yokota at 54 years of age. Per a statement from his family, Yokota died in March after “a long period of medical treatment” and the delay in the announcement was because they were “until recently unacquainted with Susumu’s music industry contacts”.
Yokota released a string of fantastic albums back in the day – his glorious ambient masterpiece “Sakura” from 2000 was probably the pick of the bunch, though there was much to admire in his back-catalogue such as “Grinning Cat” – as he moved away from the house music he was best known for at the time and began exploring more dreamy fare. Check out “Sakura” below and then begin to explore his other work.
