The first All-Ireland senior hurling medal won by jailed former hurler DJ Carey (55) has been sold at auction.
The medal was put up for auction by a couple who had been conned by the former Kilkenny hurler and convicted fraudster. They had been given the medal by Carey many years earlier after offering him help.
They said their intention was to divide the proceeds of the sale between two individuals who had been duped by Carey.
“They are living in dire circumstances as a direct result of their dealings with him,” said the medal owner in a statement to journalist Dermot Crowe. “It is my hope that the sale of this medal will benefit them.”

Whyte’s Auctioneers confirmed Carey’s 1992 All-Ireland medal won with Kilkenny, which had been offered for sale by private treaty, has been sold.
“The medal was sold privately for an undisclosed sum,” confirmed a spokesperson for Whytes Auctioneers. It was reported last week that a price in the region of €10,000 was expected for the medal.
Carey suffered a dramatic fall from grace by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed money for medical treatment in the United States.
Carey received a 5½-year prison sentence last year after pleading guilty to 10 deception charges involving 13 complainants.
At his sentencing in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the court heard his overall offending involved 22 people.
The total amount defrauded was not disclosed, though victim Noel Tynan said he gave Carey €10,000 after believing the claims that he was seriously ill.
Carey is being held at Mountjoy Prison, Dublin. He played for the Young Irelands club in Gowran, Co Kilkenny and won five All-Irelands.
He later won All-Irelands in 1993, 2000, 2002 and 2003. He also won nine All-Star awards during a glittering inter-county career.
