An IPO (initial public offering) is when a firm offers the sale of stock to the public for the first time by floating the company on the stock exchange.

Snapchat is the first US social media company to go public since Twitter more than three years ago, and it plans to raise as much as $4 billion in the IPO for a market value of $25 billion.
