Republic of Ireland international Izzy Atkinson won the Scottish Cup for Celtic for the first time in their history with an extra-time goal at Tynecastle on Sunday, the 20-year-old Dubliner getting the winner against holders Glasgow City after the sides were tied at 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Atkinson came on as a substitute in the 84th minute of the game, against a Glasgow starting XI that featured her international team-mates Claire Walsh and Clare Shine, with Niamh Farrelly coming off the bench for Glasgow midway through the first half, while Tyler Toland was a substitute for Celtic.

Celtic had led twice in normal time, through Shen Mengyu and Charlie Wellings, but Glasgow levelled both times through Jenna Clark and Lauren Davidson, Celtic reduced to 10 players when Jodie Bartle was sent off for the foul that led to the first-half penalty that Davidson converted.

Atkinson, who joined Celtic from Shelbourne in February of last year, completed a cup double for the club, who won the League Cup back in December, when she was played through by Sarah Harkes in the dying moments of extra-time, calmly slotting the ball under the advancing Glasgow goalkeeper.

The final was played in front of a crowd of 4,345, a record for the women’s Scottish Cup final.
