Funeral held for murdered Dublin man as hunt for killers continues

A 64-year-old man who was shot dead when he answered his front door earlier this month, has been buried in Dublin.

Edward Nugent, a former truck driver, was remembered at his funeral Mass at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary near his home in Walkinstown in west Dublin.

He was shot when he went to answer the door at his home on Harty Avenue just before 9.30pm on Sunday, February 15th.

Gardaí are still trying to establish why he was killed, and believe it may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Gardaí believe the shooter may have opened fire through frosted glass panels in the hall door when he saw Mr Nugent approaching to open it.

They have now issued a fresh appeal for information on the movements of a car subsequently found burnt out near to the victim’s house.

The silver Honda Civic, with a partial "04 D" registration, had distinctive alloy wheels, 'L' plates on the passenger side of the front windscreen and on the driver's side of the rear window. It was stolen from the Kilmainham area earlier that day and its movements are now being traced.
