Anthem at away rugby games

Sir, – Donald Clarke suggests, tongue in cheek I trust, replacing Amhrán na bhFiann with Ireland’s Call, (Ticket, July 24th). “No they would never do that to us. Would they?” he asks.

Well, actually, they have. Rugby’s representative body, the IRFU, bastion of all things inclusive these days, has for some time past done precisely that.

Amhrán na bhFiann is deemed worthy of an outing at home matches but replaced, on the international stage no less, by Ireland’s Call at away games.

An explanation for this bizarre downgrading? None asked by those in authority nor ever given by those who made the decision behind closed doors. For now we can just be relieved that Paddy McGinty’s Goat isn’t given an airing on our behalf. – Yours, etc,
