Ten miners missing after earthquake in Poland

Ten miners are missing after an earthquake occurred at the Rudna mine in Polkowice in southwestern Poland, state news agency PAP reported last night.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck, according to the US Geological Survey. It said the quake was very shallow, only 10 km (6.2 miles) deep.

According to Polish state authorities, the earthquake’s epicentre was located 1,500 metres underground.

One miner who was evacuated from the mine has already died, according to private Radio Zet.

“There were 16 people in the danger zone. Some of them were walked out,” a spokeswoman for the company was quoted as saying by another private radio RMF FM. The mine belongs to copper producer KGHM. – (Reuters)
