Colombo - Sri Lanka was last night heading for a hung parliament after early results from a general election indicated neither the governing People's Alliance nor the United National party (UNP) would get a majority.

A hung parliament would mean President Chandrika Kumaratunga and the opposition leader, Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe, would have to work together even though their personal relationship in recent months has often been characterised by personal animosity.
