A 23-year-old student whose body was discovered in his Sligo apartment on Monday has been named as Jamie Shaw, a first-year performing arts student at IT Sligo. Mr Shaw was from Belfast.

In a statement, IT Sligo said that Mr Shaw had been unwell for a few days and had been confined to his apartment at Clarion Village, close to campus.

The president of IT Sligo Prof Vincent Cunnane issued a statement on behalf of staff and students extending their condolences to the Shaw family “at this desperately sad time”.

The student was discovered by his flatmate at about 4pm on Monday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and the body was removed to Sligo Regional Hospital, where a postmortem was carried out. The results are not expected to be known for a number of weeks.

Gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious.

IT Sligo has provided counselling and support services to the young man’s flatmate, classmates and friends.
