Sir, – In reply to your reader’s letter “Putting Ireland’s property tax in perspective” (September 30th): it almost defends the fairness of this tax, by stating Ireland’s rates place us 13th out of 29 European countries.
I don’t believe that is any consolation to Irish pensioners who struggled and went without to buy their own houses, at huge interest rates, rather than relying on State housing. At the very least, means-tested pensioners who are in receipt of fuel allowance should be exempt from property tax. – Yours, etc,
