Sir, – Gerard Howlin’s ornithological musings on the increase in public expenditure since 2015 (“Ireland’s ballooning public spending proves Fine Gael is a fake right party”, Opinion & Analysis, February 28th) suggest, as a contributory factor, the movement of the centre to the left, in what he describes as a “great game of chicken”. Moreover, he describes our NGOs as “cuckoos in the nest”.
Perhaps some adjusting of your columnist’s binoculars is needed.
I suggest our many excellent NGOs are, in fact, canaries in the coalmine, long signalling many of the very risks described and very often to their own detriment. – Yours, etc,
