Soccer:Preston manager Darren Ferguson has exploited family ties by convincing his father Alex to allow him to sign Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on loan for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old, who signed a four-year extension to his United contract in December, goes straight into the North End squad in time for tomorrow’s trip to Peterborough.

Manchester-born Welbeck, who is Ferguson junior’s first signing as Preston boss, has scored five goals in 24 appearances for United.

It appeared like he may get more of a look in under Alex Ferguson this season, but the signing of Senegalese striker Mame Biram Diouf from Molde FK looks to have a thwarted his short-term chances at United.
