Two trains have collided near a station in northern Italy and initial reports said there were approximately 10 dead and numerous injured.

A civil protection department spokesperson said the accident involved a passenger train and a freight train.

He said the crash took place in the town of Bolognina di Crevalcore, on the line
between Bologna and Verona.

It was unclear how many people were injured.
