Boxing:Floyd Mayweather has announced he will end his latest spell in retirement by challenging Victor Ortiz for the WBC welterweight title on September 17th.
Mayweather, who has not fought since outpointing Shane Mosley in May last year, announced the news on his Twitter account, adding: “My fans have been waiting long enough.”
Mayweather’s announcement will raise hopes of an ultimate showdown with Manny Pacquiao. Thus far Mayweather has shown no desire to resume talks with the Filipino.
The 24-year-old Ortiz, beaten twice in a 26-fight career, won his title from defending champion Andre Berto in Connecticut in April. He was knocked down twice en route to winning a unanimous decision.
The venue for bout, which takes place just under two months ahead of Pacquiao’s bout with Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas on November 12th, has yet to be confirmed.
Mayweather has not fought since winning a unanimous decision against Shane Mosley in May 2010. Pacquiao's last fight was against the same opponent in May this year and he too won on points after a 12-round duel.
