The Irish Times has received a major award for its use of photography. At the Picture Editors' Awards ceremony in the Guildhall in London, the newspaper was presented with the Guinness Award for the Best Use of Black and White Photography. The Picture Editors' Awards, which are given out annually, are among the most prestigious in Britain and Ireland. This was the first year that Irish newspapers and journalists were eligible to enter.

The Kodak Photographer of the Year award went to Mr Paul Hackett of Reuters, who also took away the Fuji News Photographer title. Mr Mark Aspland of the Times in London won a special award for World Cup '98 and took the Royal Photographer of the Year title.
