Gardai in Lucan have launched a murder investigation following the death of a Leixlip man who was assaulted on in the Kildare town early yesterday morning.
Gardai are appealing to a number of people who were in the area or to any witnesses to contact them at the incident room at Lucan on 01-6667373 or any Garda Station.
The scene of the attack was on the drive of the victim's home on the Celbridge Road.
A detective said: "Mr Lacey came to the assistance of two people who took refuge in his garden after midnight.
"When he attempted to close his front gate, he was attacked and beaten by a gang of up to 10 youths.
"They later fled in the direction of Leixlip town." Mr Lacey died in Connolly Hospital at 7.30 am yesterday morning.
Investigating officers at Lucan Garda Station have appealed for members of the gang to come forward and for information from the public.
