UCC, the Cork and Munster club football champions, needed a goal in the 51st minute from midfielder Eamonn Hanrahan to get the better of Trinity College, Dublin, at the Mardyke yesterday.

Six times the sides were level during an absorbing contest after the Cork students led 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval. Hanrahan was on hand to knock in the rebound after Liam Murphy's powerful shot was saved by Trinity goalkeeper Fergus Corbett.

Chris Conway's accuracy helped Trinity to stay in touch, but the defence found the UCC full-forward line of Michael D Cahill, Liam Murphy and Ian Twiss a handful.
