Soccer: FAI chief executive John Delaney was today named the new chairman of the Aviva Stadium on a two-year term

Soccer:FAI chief executive John Delaney was today named the new chairman of the Aviva Stadium on a two-year term. He takes over the role from Philip Browne, IRFU chief executive.

Delaney, who became the youngest ever chief executive of the FAI in November 2004, has been a member of the board of the stadium company since 2005, is also a member of the Uefa disciplinary committee and vice president of the Olympic Council of Ireland.

He has been heavily involved in all aspects of the redevelopment of the old Lansdowne Road stadium.

His Uefa contacts played a key role in ensuring the Europa League final came to Ireland and takes place at the Dublin 4 venue next Wednesday (18th).

Delaney said he was “delighted” to become chairman in an “exciting time for the stadium” especially with the Europa League final and other key sporting events.

“I believe the first year of operation has given the stadium a tremendous base and look forward to building on that base over the next two years,” said Delaney.
