Séamus Power four back going into final round in Detroit

Waterford man shot a bogey-free 69 while Joaquin Niemann and Troy Merritt lead

Séamus Power sits four shots off the lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit after a bogey-free third round of 69 moved the Waterford man into a tie for 12th.

Power sealed his place in the field as the fourth alternate earlier this week and has made the most of the chance as he attempts to break into the top-125 on the FedEx Cup standings before the end of the season - a finish which would see him secure a PGA Tour card for next year.

Birdies at the first, 10th and 13th along with 15 pars left the 34-year-old four shots off joint leaders Troy Merritt – who made a hole-in-one on Saturday – and Joaquin Niemann at Detroit Golf Club.

Merritt entered the third round one shot behind Niemann and Englishman Tom Lewis, but quickly found himself in front after picking up four birdies on the front nine.

An ace on the par-3 11th extended his lead to three, however he dropped a shot on the following hole before closing out his round with a five-under 67 and a one-shot lead.

He was ultimately joined by Niemann at 14 under as the Chilean carded four birdies in a third-straight bogey-free round.

Meanwhile, Lewis was left to rue an inconsistent performance in which he split four birdies with three bogeys to fall three shots off the pace.

American Hank Lebioda and Australia’s Cam Davis lead the chasing pack at 13 under.
