Sir, – Budget control in the HSE is in disarray and there is an annual overspend of hundreds of millions of euro per year. There is no question that something urgently needs to be done to bring the budget under control.
Someone in the Department of Health has devised a cunning plan to tackle this issue: all nonclinical orders over €5,000 will need the personal authorisation of Anne O’Connor, the HSE chief executive (“Patients would contribute more for drugs under proposed policy,” September 23rd).
Does this genius have any idea how many HSE orders are over €5,000? The poor chief executive will be signing such orders nonstop and doing pretty much little else for a salary of €406,000. Such vacuous ideas neatly illustrate why the HSE’s budget control is in a mess. – Yours, etc,
