Sir, – The overcrowding in Irish prisons is totally unacceptable. The attempt to deal with the worsening situation through the Community Return Scheme is both laudable and necessary.
However, I would have thought the last people to have been considered for release under this scheme would have been violent offenders. Whether such an offender is a man or a woman is immaterial and the Social Democrats’ justice spokesman’s observation that prison is not the right place for a woman who has children is just bizarre. – Yours, etc,
Brendan McMahon,
