Sir, – We were treated to an amazing amount of detail about the journey of Daniel Kinahan from the Middle East to the Special Criminal Court. All seems to have been covered. And yet, according to Conor Lally’s report (“Daniel Kinahan to be segregated in Portlaoise Prison with his own gym and library,” August 10th), ) gardaí had to transport Kinahan to Portlaoise Prison, as the Irish Prison Service does not work out of hours; and a nurse had to assess Kinahan because apparently no doctor was available. Sir, – It was with some surprise and dismay that I learned from Conor Lally’s report that “The prison escort service does not operate out of hours to and from our courts, certainly not on a Sunday night. So it was the gardaí who delivered the 49-year-old Dubliner to the Co Laois jail.”
This is incredible given the extensive, meticulous and persistent work of all those involved in bringing Kinahan to this point in the judicial process. What is the point of the prison escort service if it is unable to facilitate one of the most momentous detentions in the State’s history? – Yours, etc,
