Promises, promises

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

A chara, – Our outgoing Government is targeting 303,000 new homes being built between 2025 and 2030 (“New housing target to be set at average of 50,500 homes a year”, News, November 4th).

This would mean building 161.1 homes a day, every day, seven days a week from today until 2030.

A total of 89.58 homes per day were built during 2023 so already our Government requires a 79.73 per cent additional increase in production to reach 161 units per day.

However, if we work from January 1st, 2025, on the assumption of approximately 231 working days per year, 365 days minus Sundays, Saturdays, bank holidays and personal holidays, with zero sick days, while adding back the one leap year day, the number of new builds skyrockets to 262.11 per working day.

This would require an additional 193 per cent increase in production compared to 2023 output.

I’ve no problem with ambitious goals but this particular target gives an uncomfortable feeling of electioneering. – Is mise,
