Sir, – Who could disagree with your editorial calling on the US to insist on an immediate Israeli ceasefire? (“The Irish Times view on Gaza: international community must push for fighting to end”, December 7th). This must happen.
Belatedly, the US administration has made public requests to Israel asking for its military to minimise civilian casualties. These pleas have been ignored on the ground and civilians continue to die in significant numbers. Moreover, the US has issued these pleas while supplying much of the munitions dropped on Gaza, including enormous 2,000lb “bunker buster” bombs.
The US absolutely must pressure Israel for a ceasefire, but it cannot escape culpability for what has occurred. – Yours, etc,
FINTAN LANE,
