Italian Andrea Gaudenzi defeated Pete Sampras in the first round of the French Open today with a battling 3-6 6-4 6-2 7-6 win.
It was a disappointing finish to the day for the 12th-seeded American as he looked set for victory before two rain interruptions put paid to his hopes.
Sampras captured the first set with his trademark serve and volley game but Gaudenzi came roaring back to grab the next three with a solid display from the baseline.
Gaudenzi, ranked 69th, will take on American qualifier Jack Brasington for a place in the third round.
