We must begin to question our participation in future Olympic Games if we were not in a position to provide the appropriate level of preparation and administration which our athletes deserved, said Mr Jim Glennon (FF).

Joining other senators in calling for a debate on sport, Mr Glennon, a former Irish rugby international, said it was appropriate that they should congratulate not only Sonia O'Sullivan but all our competitors who had taken part in the Sydney games. It was regrettable that those congratulations could not also be directed to officialdom. That was an issue which needed to be dealt with as soon as possible.

Seanad leader Mr Donie Cassidy, said members would be given an opportunity next Wednesday to air their views in the presence of the Minister for Sport, Dr McDaid.
