Gardaí seize e-scooters from two users in Donegal

E-scooters must be roadworthy, registered, taxed and insured, gardaí say

Gardaí in Co Donegal seized two e-scooters at the weekend after people were observed using them in Buncrana.

A Donegal Garda spokesperson said e-scooters are considered to be mechanically propelled vehicles, adding: "If an MPV is used in a public place, it is subject to all of the regulatory controls that apply to other vehicles."

The spokesperson said the e-scooters must be roadworthy, must be registered, taxed and insured.

The driver must hold the appropriate driving licence and must also wear a helmet, added the Garda spokesperson.

“It is currently not possible to tax or insure e-scooters and so they are not considered suitable for use in a public place,” added the spokesperson.

The spokesperson referred all further enquiries to the Road Safety Authority website for the use of such scooters.

The two e-scooters were seized on Sunday night.
