Cape Town - A hardened apartheid assassin, Ferdi Barnard, begged for - and received - forgiveness yesterday from the Transport Minister, Mr Dullah Omar, for plotting to kill him in 1989.

In one of the most unexpected scenes to unfold before the country's truth commission, Mr Omar shook Barnard's hand and wished him good luck. Barnard made a clean breast of his many apartheid-era crimes, which he had denied for 12 years.
