Icona Pop: This Is. . . Icona Pop

You will know Icona Pop from the giddy exuberance of I Love It, an earworm that was aural catnip for radio and TV editors seeking tunes to soundtrack the day's football highlights. The question, of course, is whether Swedish duo Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo can produce more bangers like that one. There are certainly plenty of pretenders to the crown, but that's only because the pair reuse the I Love It formula of super-trashy beats and fizzy choruses at every opportunity, without achieving the same results (see Ready for the Weekend for ample proof this policy doesn't work). Icona Pop are on far firmer ground when they try a slightly different tack and turn down the dayglo energy, as with Just Another Night or On a Roll. A case of an album scuppered by a lack of imagination in the execution department. iconapop.com
