CSO to recruit 430 census supervisors

The Central Statistics Office is to commence recruitment for some 430 census field supervisor positions on Thursday September 17th, ahead of next year's census, which will take place on April 24th. Applicants can expect to earn up to about €14,350 for the six month contracts. The CSO will also start recruiting for some 4,700 enumerators next January, with typical earnings of about €2,500 on offer for a 10-week stint distributing and collecting census forms.

The census is a detailed account of everyone who is in the country on a particular night. It counts every individual in order to establish population size and to analyse changes that have occurred in society.

Every census includes questions on basic demographic and social topics such as age, sex, marital status, education, employment status and occupation. The last census was held on April 10th 2011.

According to the CSO, field supervisors will be paid a weekly rate of €409.06 to manage a team of 10 enumerators andwill work on a temporary full-time basis from their own home from January to June.

Supervisors will also be entitled to a supervisory allowance of €83.15 a week, as well as an atypical work allowance of up to €701, and a terminal payment of up to €650, as well as other allowances such as one for home storage of sensitive documents.

Applications for the roles will open on Thursday September 16th, with the closing date for applications Thursday, September 24th at 5pm.

Enumerators

The CSO has already hired a number of senior managers for next year’s census, and it will launch the third and final phase of its recruitment campaign in January, 2016, when it will seek to hire 4,700 census enumerators.

Census enumerators typically work 22 hours a week, mostly evenings and weekends, and the contract will run for 10 weeks from 21st March until 27th May 2016.

According to the CSO enumerators, who are responsible for delivering and collecting census data for about 400 homes each, will get paid €3.50 for each completed form. Enumerators are also entitled to a number of allowances including home storage, and Sunday and bank holiday working, as well as a final bonus payment, giving typical total earnings of about €2,500.
