Compaq Computer will make at least 30 managers redundant following the integration of two business units in Dublin as part of a restructuring programme.
The firm, which employs about 2,100 people in the Republic, told managers and team leaders at its support centre offices at East Point and Clonskeagh about the cutbacks last week.
Compaq is integrating its professional services support centre at East Point with its technical support unit in Clonskeagh. This move will result in the transfer of up to 280 staff at East Point to its Clonskeagh office and will enable Compaq to cut costs.
The redundancies, the final numbers of which have yet to be finalised, follow an intensive re-interview process conducted among management at its two technical support units. This process even included top management such as the current managing director of Compaq's Clonskeagh operation, Mr Jack Cunnane.
Mr Cunnane said yesterday the company had taken out one layer of management through the redundancies but Compaq was still recruiting "customer-facing" employees. He said the firm aimed to boost staff to 1,000 from 900 at its technical support centre.
