The America international capped a wonderful first-half performance with a superb strike, hooking in a half-cleared corner into the top corner.

Dempsey then nabbed his second of the evening three minutes after the break to see him become break Fulham’s club record for most Premier League goals by a single player.

The midfielder’s goal haul of 33 saw him move ahead of Steed Malbranque and Brian McBride in the record books, before Brede Hangeland stooped in to head home the Cottagers’ third.
