Evan Ferguson scored the opening goal as AS Roma beat Lecce 2-0 in Serie A at Stadio Via del Mare.

The Irish striker scored his third league goal of the season and his fifth in all competitions after being slipped in from a pass by Paolo Dybala, taking one touch and powerfully shooting low past goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone.

Ferguson was subbed off at the hour-mark for his main striker rival for a starting position Artem Dovbyk, who scored the second goal of the game after a Niccolò Pisilli shot from a Dybala corner was deflected in by the Ukrainian.

Dovbyk’s joy was short-lived as he was substituted for Alessandro Romano before the end of the game after suffering an injury.

Ferguson’s performance earned him a player of the match award as he continues his good form for Roma on loan from Brighton.

The victory moved Roma up to fourth in the Serie A table, three points behind leaders Inter Milan, albeit the leading three teams Inter, AC Milan and Napoli all have two games in hand.
