Ulster MFC quarter-final Garland brothers help Monaghan

David (16) grabs two goals while older sibling Shane makes two brilliant saves to foil Tyrone comeback

The Garland brothers stole the show at the Athletic Grounds as defending champions Monaghan dumped Tyrone out of the Ulster minor football championship.

Sixteen-year-old David grabbed two goals, while older sibling Shane pulled off two brilliant saves late in the game to foil Tyrone’s comeback.

Francis Maguire sprinted through a gaping hole in the Tyrone defence to drill home the first goal for Monaghan after 11 minutes, and with the help of two delightful David McAllister points, they led by 1-5 to 0-1 at the end of the opening quarter.

Twenty minutes had elapsed when McAllister drifted over to the left wing to hoist a dropping ball into the goalmouth, where David Garland punched to the net.

In stoppage time, the pair combined for a carbon copy goal, and the reigning Ulster champions went in at the break with a massive ten points lead, 3-6 to 0-5.

But Tyrone dragged themselves off the floor and back into contention with a much -improved second-half showing.

Cormac O’Hagan, Lee Brennan, Conor McKenna, Enda McGarrity and substitute Conan McLernon all knocked over points as Tyrone finally started to function.

McKenna fired a shot into the side netting and had two more superbly saved by Shane Garland in the closing stages.
