Cork accept Clare apology after sliotar incident

Clare have issued a formal apology to the Cork county board after video footage emerged of a member of their backroom team throwing a bag containing goalkeeper Anthony Nash’s sliotars into the crowd during last Sunday’s Munster senior hurling final at Semple Stadium.

It is understood that the individual is related to a member of the backroom team, and known to Clare, and a Clare spokesman said on Tuesday that joint team managers Gerry O'Connor and Donal Moloney are "extremely disappointed with what happened, and that it should never have happened."

The individual is seen to to make his way behind the Killinan End goal, patrolled by Cork goalkeeper Nash in the first half, before doubling back and picking up a red-coloured bag.

Cork county board chairman Ger Lane also confirmed a Clare counterpart had been in touch “to apologise for the situation”, that “Clare have identified who was involved in the incident, and they regret that it happened”.

Cork will not take the matter any further, having considered an approach to the Munster Council in relation to the matter. Cork emerged five-point winners, while Clare will face Tipperary in the quarter-finals in Saturday week.
