Sir – Regarding your editorial on State IT projects (June 30th), the tech sector’s ageism creates the ideal candidate pool for State recruitment: they could target tech professionals who are at a later stage in their careers, and who could act as sceptics and institutional memory for State agencies who lack that expertise. People with 35 to 40 years of industry experience, too old to pivot to the latest tech in fashion but too sharp to retire.

State bodies don’t need more digital visionaries. They need more IT grey hairs in the room who have spent decades managing vendors and delivering projects. Delivering a State project on budget and on time is an honourable way to finish a career. – Yours, etc,

MARK TWOMEY,

Watergrasshill,
