Colleague’s reaction to my pregnancy news was a real buzzkill

Sir, - in Jen Hogan’s interview with Sarah McInerney (Conversations with Parents, April 14th), Sarah recalls her manager’s response to news of her pregnancy, which was to say “I suppose these things can’t be helped”. It reminded me of an equally curious response I received many years ago.

I was a young solicitor working close to St Stephen’s Green when I told a senior colleague my wife was expecting a baby. I relayed this news with joy. He responded by saying: “Make sure you engage an obstetrician who works out of Holles Steet – it will make it easier for you to manage working in the days before and immediately after the baby arrives.”

I accelerated my career planning. - Yours, etc,

STEPHEN KEOGH,

Clonlara,

Co Clare.
