Having held off main rival Cadel Evans in Saturday's crucial time trial, the Spaniard finished safely in the peleton on Paris' Champs Elysees.

Sastre, of Team CSC, claimed victory by 58 seconds from Evans, the Australian making up seven seconds on the final day due to a split in the peleton.

Austria's Bernhard Kohl - the race's King of the Mountains - also claimed a podium place in third.

Belgian Gert Steegmans won the 143km final stage from Etampes in a bunch sprint finish, seeing off the fast-finishing Gerald Ciolek.

Sastre becomes the third successive Spaniard to win the Tour after Oscar Pereiro in 2006 and Alberto Contador in 2007.
