Trial of facelift surgeon adjourned
The multimillion dollar lawsuit being taken against a New York surgeon by the family of a Limerick woman, who died after undergoing a facelift, was adjourned again yesterday.
Kay Cregan (42) from Croom died on St Patrick's Day 2005 three days after undergoing surgery at the Dr Michael Evan Sachs's clinic.
Shortly after her death, it emerged Dr Sachs had been involved in more than 30 malpractice cases since 1995. Last March he was struck off the register of the New York State Board for professional misconduct.
The legal action against Dr Sachs by Ms Cregan's family was listed to come before the New York Supreme Court yesterday. Pre-trial discussions were adjourned until April 23rd, when a trial date is expected to be set.
Dr Sachs denies plastic surgery was connected to Ms Cregan's death despite an autopsy report suggesting it was a contributing factor.
Alcoholic jailed for assaults
A young alcoholic man has been jailed for five years for breaking into a Dublin house party and assaulting two men with an iron bar on October 30th, 2005.
John Joyce (24), Whitestown Park, Blanchardstown, and Bailieborough, Co Cavan, burst into the party at Bellgree, Tyrellstown, with two others and beat Ian Coyle with an iron bar in a bedroom.
The court heard that Joyce beat Mr Coyle before going to the back garden to beat another partygoer, Cormac Brannigan.
Det Garda Karl McCormick said Joyce claimed he was provoked by a row with the house-owner during a drinking session earlier that evening. The father-of-one apologised to the injured parties through his counsel, and offered €3,000 in compensation.
Judge Patrick McCartan in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court suspended the final two years of the sentence.
Actor jailed over stun gun imports
An actor who imported 10 stun guns to see "if there would be a market for them here" has been jailed for two years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Robert Scales (37), Waterloo Road, Dublin said he did not know the weapons were illegal here when he imported them from Thailand, and he intended to sell them to taxi drivers. He pleaded guilty to possession of firearms at his home on November 14th, 2007.
The court heard Scales initially claimed he intended to give the stun guns as gifts to female relatives and friends. He later admitted he intended to sell them to "taxi drivers and people like that".
Addict jailed for M50 chase
A Dublin drug addict who drove the wrong way on the M50 motorway while chased by gardaí last year has been jailed for three years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Gardaí pursued Stewart Perrie (35), Achill Road, Ballybrack, along the Ballymun exit of the M50 on November 7th, 2007, when the owner of a stolen 4x4 reported seeing it.
Perrie told gardaí he panicked and accelerated the vehicle, which sustained €67,274 in damage, to over 120km/h. He rammed the Garda patrol car before making a U-turn and driving northbound on the southbound carriageway.
Sgt Charlie Armstrong said Perrie tried to escape on foot but was apprehended.
Judge Frank O'Donnell noted that Perrie had 37 previous convictions, including for theft of a motorbike.
