70% of young jobless intend emigrating
Some 70 per cent of young unemployed Irish people think they are likely to emigrate in the next 12 months, writes Cian Nihill.
That is the finding of a report by the National Youth Council of Ireland being launched today in Dublin.
The council called the results of their research into the lived experience of young unemployed people in Ireland “a worrying and shocking insight into the difficulties faced by young job seekers across the country”.
The Lost Generationreport shows 100 per cent of the respondents agreed the prospects for employment were not very good at present.
Some 90 per cent said being unemployed had a negative effect on their sense of wellbeing.
“This research confirmed to us that the consequences are severe for young people if the high and rising level of unemployment is not dealt with quickly and effectively,” the council’s assistant director, James Doorley, said.
“The current services provided by Fás and the Department of Social Protection are not co-ordinated . . . and in many cases unsuitable or not geared towards the needs of the young people it is meant to serve,” he added.
The research, which was the first of its kind in Ireland, found unemployed young people experienced many types of social and economic exclusion.
Man on trial for murder of flatmate
A man has gone on trial charged with murdering his flatmate in a crime the prosecution says was motivated by jealousy.
Marcio Goncalves da Silva (31), from Brazil, has pleaded not guilty to murdering separated mother Joselita Dos Anjos Figueiredo Perieria da Silva (33), to whom he was not related, in October 2009.
Mr da Silva has pleaded guilty to Ms da Silva’s manslaughter in their flat above a takeaway on Tara Street in Tullamore, Co Offaly. This was not accepted by the prosecution.
Patrick Gageby SC, prosecuting, told the Central Criminal Court yesterday the accused man had become “very attached” to Ms da Silva.
The trial before Mr Justice Garrett Sheehan is expected to last four to five days.
No verdict reached in hotel rape trial
A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the trial of a man accused of raping a woman as she lay beside her boyfriend in a hotel room.
The jury of six men and six women deliberated for 3½ hours before telling Mr Justice Paul Carney it would not be able to agree on a verdict.
The 26-year-old accused man had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping the woman at the hotel in Tipperary after a wedding on July 7th, 2008.
Mr Justice Carney remanded the man on continuing bail until next week, when the case will be listed for mention.
