Lima - The Peruvian opposition candidate, Mr Alejandro Toledo, yesterday called for nationwide protests "against the dictatorship" a day after pulling out of the planned second round of presidential elections here.

The call came against the backdrop of alarm over the prospect of a possible uncontested "re-election" of President Alberto Fujimori, to a third five-year term in office, amid vote fraud charges by the opposition and election monitors.
