An improvised bomb and a quantity of dangerous chemicals were made safe by an Army bomb disposal team in two separate call-outs in Dublin today.

In the first incident, what a Defence Forces spokesman described as a viable improvised explosive device was made safe outside a private residence in Newbury Heights, Clonshaugh.

No controlled explosion was carried out and the remains of the device were handed over to gardaí for their investigations, the spokesman said.

The team arrived at 2.20pm and the scene was declared safe at 3pm.

In the second call out, a quantity of picric acid, which had become unstable, was removed from St Marys Hospital, Phoenix Park and made safe by means of a controlled explosion.

The team arrived on scene at 3.30pm and the scene was declared safe at 5.20pm, the spokesman said.
