Former Irish Times managing editor appointed chair of NLI

The former managing editor of The Irish Times Eoin McVey has been appointed as the chair of the National Library of Ireland.

Mr McVey has served on the board for the past five years as an ordinary member and deputy chair.

The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin also appointed Lisa Grimm, Prof Kalpana Shankar, Prof Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, John Grenham, Lorelei Harris, and Caitriona Sharkey as members of the board.

The appointments were made following an open competition operated by the Public Appointments Service and are for a term of five years.

Ms Martin said Mr McVey “brings a wealth of experience to the role” and will play a crucial part in steering the National Library of Ireland “through the many challenges that Covid-19 has brought to the cultural sector”.

“I am also delighted to appoint six members to the board. I know these new members will ensure that the National Library continues to be one of our pre-eminent National Cultural Institutions,” said Ms Martin.

“I thank all the board members for taking on these roles and bringing their skills and expertise to the board. I also want to thank board members whose terms have expired, for their strong contributions over several years.”
