Shamrock Rovers have been hit with a three point deduction for fielding a player while under suspension but Derry City have escaped punishment for a similar offence.

Rovers were charged today for fielding Shiels who had incurred a suspension while playing for the now defunct Dublin City.

Rovers claim they were unaware of Shiels ban when he played for the club against Dundalk.

Derry City, who also faced a points deduction for fielding the left back Sean Hargan in their recent win over Bohemians, escaped similar punishment after the League accepted that notice of the ban was not sent early enough.

Shelbourne, meanwhile, will continue with their protests after the league's management committee yesterday stood by a decision to expunge Dublin City's points from the record and keep the Premier Division table as it currently stands.
